So I am sitting on the couch watching TV when this random thought pops into my head: “You couldn’t have stopped any of it.” Hmmm. We are always ruing things that happened in our lives, but what if we had absolutely no control over any of them? And that is the truth. As Edgar Cayce wrote, “All you can change is your attitude.”
And I rue so many things, as I am sure you do, too. The cruel words, the glaring eye, the spiteful response; I could go on and on.
G. I. Gurdjieff wrote that man cannot do. Boy, was he ever right! There is no such thing as free will on the mental level. Everything just happens in the only way that it can happen.
But back to my own look at my life. I couldn’t have stopped my child’s death or how it has impacted the rest of my life. I couldn’t stop her father’s death either, nor will I be able to stop my own.
We are being hoodwinked by slick hucksters when we are told that we can choose our futures. Sadly, humankind is not capable of that. We are capable of having desires that go nowhere and dreams that go unrealized.
I used to want to be a humorist and instead I became a spiritual writer. Let me make this clear; I am distinctly human. It was my good fortune to have a mother that introduced me to the writings of G. I. Gurdjieff. And again, it was just my good karma to run across a talk given by Vernon Howard.
I prefer the unvarnished truth and I write for readers that prefer it, too. Of course, we feel parental love for our children, but it is damaged by our egos, isn’t it? We all require frequent forgiveness because we are walking in our sleep.
I feel a deep sorrow these days as I watch the world slip into autocracy and suffer the affects of global warming. But remember, we couldn’t have stopped any of it.
What we are is knee-deep in sleepwalking! May God have mercy on us all. I still fall asleep to one of Leonard Cohen’s CD’s. Now they all have skips in them but no matter, I still prefer him to any other singer.
Thanks for supporting the blog in 2021. I pray that we will all stay connected during the coming year.
Love,
Vicki
Vicki,
I too pray for our continued connectedness. Your essays and words are a saving grace for my mental state. So thank you for your efforts. We know that the inner work is a solitary job, but knowing of and accessing other voices in the wilderness is a relief to not feeling alone. Respites with kindred spirits.
Many years ago I was convinced that we possessed the wonderful gift of free will. That was what set us apart from the animals. Anything was possible. Along the way, through bursts of knowing and hard learning, I came to understand that the play had been written and the story was set in stone….no matter what moves I/we made. Perhaps a deal is struck and a contract is signed before we are born. Then the unfolding begins until all is laid flat and all movement stops. The shape of things we leave behind are meant to be.
Yes, music is a balm to sooth. It is good medicine. It’s playing softly now has I head toward sleep.
Goodnight dear Vicki,
Tami
That is a very good recap, Tami!
Good one Vicki. Actually great. You got it, you said it. Now you can just relax. In this one you sound like some non duality „teachers“. Sincerity, honesty, sharing.
It is all happening without a fabricated „you“ doing it. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord, praise the lordship that we all are. 🙏 ❣️
The story is timeless yet needs to be told again and again and again.
