We are addicted to our egos. Simple as that. A true teacher puts you to work studying self-harm. As Vernon Howard used to say, “No one knowingly hurts himself.” So we hurt ourselves because we are asleep. Christ counsels us to awaken. Once the soul becomes earnest about this endeavor, all the angels in heaven will come to his or her aid. But the devils will rise up to undermine your efforts. The devils are simply mechanical forces inside of you. They rule the earth of your ego. Jesus said that His kingdom was not of this world. In other words, He had risen above the ego.
