“Follow me, the wise man said, but he walked behind.”
‘Teachers’ from Songs Of Leonard Cohen (1967)
I wrote this yesterday and read Leonard’s quote above just now.
I don’t know why you’re following me,
who doesn’t have a clue.
I’m old and gray but in the day
I knew a thing or two.
I don’t know what you think of me
but this I’ll have to say.
The words flow in and they flow out
in a loosey-goosey way.
I have a sense I know what’s true
and yet there’s doody on my shoe.
A rose, a thorn and I am torn
between the “me and you.”
And yet we’re one and almost done
and barely even have begun.
I don’t know why you’re following me
but I love you, yes, I do.
